Bernie Sanders, socialist champion of many of today’s liberal youth and perpetual denouncer of Wall Street and cronyism, recently endorsed Hillary Clinton, his rival for the Democratic nomination after reneging on his promise to fight all the way to the Democratic National Convention. Bernie built his name by denouncing Wall Street, the big banks and cronyism, and spend a good part of the campaign pointing out that Clinton was part of that which he denounced. He overtly declared that she was not qualified to be President.

J. R. R. Tolkien observed, in the Lord of the Rings, that “the burned hand teaches best.”

What of the Berned hand? After all, didn’t Sanders’ supporters embrace his Feel the Bern motto? Have they learned a lesson about idealistic socialists who promise them the world (or more specifically, other people’s stuff)? Have they figured out that politicians will always disappoint them, and that they should back only those politicians who promise to do the least?

Somehow, I don’t think so.
